Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, those at ends of branches crowded into pseudoverticils, juvenile leaves opposite. Margins entire. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers in a dichasium, borne in the axil of a leaf or bud scale. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Hypanthium turbinate-campanulate, scarcely extending beyond apex of ovary. Calyx of 5 sepals, usually persistent, caducous only in L. confertus. Corolla of 5 petals, white to cream. Stamens numerous; filaments connate into fascicles opposite the petals; anthers dithecal, dorsifixed, the connective gland–tipped. Ovary partly inferior, (1)2–12(–16)-carpellate, 3-celled, placentation axile or pseudoaxile; ovules numerous, anatropous; stigma capitate.

Fruit: Capsules semiglobose or cup-shaped; apically flatted truncate; splitting into 3 parts but still surrounded by hypanthium. Seeds few; linear; sometimes winged.
